What about ALCOLHOLIC beverages?
Hi all! In several months I have my 20 year high school reunion!!
Of course there will be alcohol, and I will likely want to have a couple drinks with old friends. WHAT IS THERE that is low sugar AND not carbonated?? What do you guys have experience with when it comes to alcohol after WLS?
Thanks!
Leah

My advice is not to drink......With being only a few months out from surgery it will hit you fast.....You could even get sick and have to leave....
If you are determined to drink, I would try something at home first....

My doc said I should not drink ANY alcohol for the first 12 months after my surgery. I asked why and she said -
1. too much sugar
2. transfer addiction
I have had one experience thus far with dumping (from sugar), it was not a pleasant one and have no plans to try anything that may make me dump again. I would rather have a different transfer addiction - so for me, no alcohol is the rule for now.

I used to like to go out and have a drink, but I do NOT trust having even a small drink and driving home. I am 4 months out. I used to have a glass of wine most nights prior to surgery. Since surgery I have had on a couple of occasions a small 4 oz glass of wine that I have very slowly sipped over a 2 hr period and I seem to do ok. At home mind you, no driving. But I found I have a headache the next day if I don't have water along with it.
But for 99.5% of time I just order a Virgin Bloody Mary, yum! It's still tasty and a nice change.
So that's my 2 cents. If you fear cross addiction, just don't drink, you can still have fun without it.

Not to come across like a drill seargent (SP?), but you are WAY to early post-op to even consider ****tails of ANY sort. SURELY your bariatric program mentioned that before you went under the knife?
You do NOT want to try alcohol this soon, nor do you want to be out in public the first time you DO try it, because it WILL affect you differently than you might have been accustomed to. You might even get quite ill - I've seen some people in a VERY miserable way, because they didn't think the rules applied to them. NOT PRETTY.
You can have virgin drinks (be very careful with sugar!), or jus****er with lemon and/or lime, and STILL enjoy the people at the reunion!
I'm not a saint in this department, I have a few once in a while. But I'm WAY further post-op than you. Please think it over very carefully, this is the time to really heal up and learn how to treat your tool with respect. You didn't put yourself through WLS just to create a different set of issues.

Imperfect does not = unsuccessful
I wouldn't even consider drinking alcohol at your reunion. It's too soon (even though it's several months away), and too dangerous. I was a very responsible drinker prior to surgery, and quickly developed the dreaded cross-addiction. It's a slippery slope, and it's just not worth the risk. I think the program guidelines should be even more strict than they are with drinking.
Everyone who has responded with "you're too early out" or "don't drink" is just being cautious for you, please heed their warnings!!! It is way too soon. Sure, some will try it. But, pay for it severely. Why risk being at something as cool as your reunion, drinking when you know you shouldn't, and losing it all and then some - or acting goofy because you caught the quick buzz and it emptied right away? I hope you'll consider everyone's responses and take them to heart. In the end, you're the adult and you'll make your own decision but man oh man I hope you'll take their words seriously and spare yourself the troubles that could come from drinking too early out!
